Statement in Response to Sanctions Announced Against the ICC by the U.S. State Department
Washington, D.C. (December 18, 2025) – Today Marco Rubio made clear that the protection of Israeli war criminals from legal accountability is a higher priority for his State Department than the promotion of the rules based order, or the future of U.S. global leadership. These sanctions are not just a betrayal of justice, they are a betrayal of the work of America’s greatest generation who toiled, after World War II, to create a system that, in the words of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, would be “more than an end to war… an end to the beginning of all wars.”Putting Benjamin Netanyahu’s impunity ahead of America’s fundamental interest in a functioning international order weakens both U.S. global leadership and the system on which it is premised, and should be disqualifying for further service either as Secretary of State, or any future potential elected office.
