Statement in Response to President Trump’s Announcement of a Ceasefire Agreement
Washington, D.C. (October 8, 2025) – As President Franklin Delano Roosevelt said, “More than an end to war, we want an end to the beginnings of all wars.”
A New Policy is immensely relieved by news of a ceasefire agreement. The people of Gaza have experienced untold suffering; an end to Israel’s bombardment and a full exchange of all Israeli and Palestinian hostages could not be more urgent.
This is a moment to begin a conversation, not end one. The United States must recognize that its long-standing involvement in the region has undermined our national interests and security. A pathway toward a just and lasting peace must include self-determination for the Palestinian people, the security of Israelis, and a new American approach.
Over the coming weeks, A New Policy will be working hard to remind elected officials that the American people demand answers:
Why has it taken over two years and hundreds of thousands of casualties for a ceasefire to finally come about?
Why have our leaders subverted American laws, sacrificed American values, and spent billions of taxpayer dollars to continue the unconditional flow of lethal weapons to Israel?
Why have we deported students, repressed free speech, and sabotaged the mechanisms of our democratic processes not to oppose a genocide, but to enable one?
Accountability demands that we look back, not only at what happened in Gaza, but in America as well, so that we can finally look forward, and reach a just and lasting peace.
